A pessary is a removable silicone device which can be inserted into the vagina to manage a prolapse or incontinence.
Vaginal prolapse is a common condition where the bladder, bowel and/or uterus descends into the vagina.
Symptoms include:
Treatment is recommended when you are experiencing symptoms. There are a number of ways that vaginal prolapse can be treated. Vaginal pessaries are an option for many women - our physiotherapist can determine the stage of your prolapse and discuss whether a pessary is right for you.
What is a vaginal pessary?
A vaginal pessary is a device which supports the vagina. It can be removed by the physio every three months, or we can teach you how to remove and insert the pessary, so you can manage it yourself. Depending on the type of pessary, you may remove it once a week, once a month or daily; and some women only use them for when they are exercising. Vaginal pessaries have been proven to be as successful as surgery in relieving prolapse symptoms, in some women. You and your physio will discuss the most suitable option for you.
How does a pessary work?
The pessary sits high inside the vagina. When it is in the correct position you should not be able to feel it. After the pessary has been inserted you can resume all of your normal day to day activity, including sexual activity with some pessaries. In fact, the pessary should improve your ability to exercise and be active as it supports the prolapse and should make you feel more comfortable.
If you feel the pessary is not working well, it can easily be removed. Sometimes you need a different size or type of pessary.
How is the pessary inserted?
The pessary is easy to insert. It is inserted through your vagina.
Your physiotherapist can place the pessary at your visit to the clinic. No anaesthetic is required - it is similar to inserting a tampon or menstrual cup. Sometimes a number of sizes need to be tried to find the right size for you. At Mint we have pessary fitting kits which allow you to trial the different types of pessaries and/or a different size of pessary, prior to purchasing your own.
Our expert Women's Health Physiotherapists will find the right pessary for you to manage your prolapse symptoms or incontinence. Some women choose to wear their pessary all the time, some only need it for exercising - we can tailor your usage to suit your body and your lifestyle.
